Romualdo Locatelli, born in Bergamo, Northern Italy, was a prominent Italian painter in the "Mooi Indie" Orientalist genre. After studying at the Carrara and Brera academies, he gained early success in Bergamo and Milan, leading him to establish his atelier in Rome's Via Margutta.
From 1933 to 1938, Locatelli became the official portraitist for Vatican prelates and the Italian Royal family. Seeking new inspiration, he moved to Bali in 1939, where Southeast Asia's unspoiled landscapes and rich cultures deeply influenced his most celebrated works.
