Samsul Arifin
B. 1979
Samsul Arifin, active since the early 2000s, is known for his paintings, sculptures, and installations that often center on familiar objects such as fabric dolls, pencils, and erasers. These recurring motifs are deeply personal, rooted in his upbringing in Dampit, Malang, East Java. As the son of a seamstress, Samsul spent his childhood helping his family measure, cut, and sew fabrics, shaping his attachment to the fabric doll as both subject and symbol. His works have been exhibited in notable shows such as the Pra Bali Biennale (2005), Young Arrows (2006), and the Shanghai Art Fair (2007), and he has received multiple awards for painting, watercolorus, and sketches.
