B. 1972
M. Irfan, born in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra in 1972, studied metal craft at ISI Yogyakarta and co-founded the Kelompok Seni Rupa Jendela with fellow artists such as Handiwirman Saputra and Jumaldi Alfi. His early works (mid-1990s to mid-2000s) leaned toward abstraction and minimalism, a phase he called “painting the essentials,” and also explored other media like sculpture and installation.
Later, he experimented with photorealism, op art, and formalism, before becoming known in recent years for his meticulously detailed depictions of vehicles and transport infrastructure.
