    Siauw Tik Kwie

    1913 – 1988

Siauw Tik Kwie, also known as Oto Suastika, was born in Surakarta on June 21, 1913. He began studying painting in 1954 with the Himpunan Budaya Surakarta (Surakarta Cultural Society) under Dr. Moerdowo and later pursued formal art education at the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta, alongside his friend Lee Man Fong.

Moving to Jakarta in the late 1930s, he joined the Bataviasche Kunstring (Batavian Art Circle). He held his first solo exhibition in 1963 and participated in numerous group shows in various cities.

In 1950, Otto returned to Jakarta and, at the request of PK Ojong—co-founder of the Kompas daily—created the comic series Sie Jin Kui, adapted from Chinese martial arts tales and published in Star Weekly from 1954 to 1961. In 1955, together with fellow artists, he co-founded the Yin Hua Chinese Artists Association, organizing exhibitions both locally and regionally.
