Putu Sutawijaya
B. 1971
Putu Sutawijaya, born in Tabanan, Bali, is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans painting, sculpture, and performance. He studied art at SMSR Denpasar and the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta, graduating in 1998. His artistic journey began in his teens, illustrating novel covers, which sharpened his skills and instilled discipline. His work is deeply rooted in Bali's spiritual and artistic traditions, bridging ritual heritage with contemporary art sensibilities.
Sutawijaya's international breakthrough came with a solo show at Gajah Gallery, Singapore, and a group exhibition in Hong Kong in 1999. He has received several awards, including the Phillip Morris International Art Award (1999).
Over time, he has transitioned from painting to sculpture, using recycled metal to depict a range of human emotions. His 2010 solo exhibition, "Gesticulation," for example, featured sculptures made from scrap iron, capturing themes of joy, anxiety, and suffering. His extensive exhibition history includes artist residencies in Switzerland and Malaysia, as well as numerous shows in Indonesia and abroad.
