    Batara Lubis

    Indonesia Indonesia

    1927 – 1986

Batara Lubis studied at the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) Yogyakarta from 1952 to 1958, after training under prominent artists Affandi, Hendra Gunawan, and Trubus Soedarsono. A member of Sanggar Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Painters Studio) founded by Hendra Gunawan and others, he often painted outdoors, capturing the social life of Yogyakarta in scenes from Pasar Ngasem, Beringharjo Market, and Parangtritis Beach. His early spontaneous style contrasted with the realism of his mentors, yet he persisted in developing his own approach.

Since 1955, Batara Lubis actively participated in exhibitions in Yogyakarta and beyond. He also produced batik paintings that were presented in Bali, Jakarta, the Netherlands, and Italy, establishing his reputation as a versatile artist whose works bridged traditional Indonesian themes with a modern sensibility.
