Popo Iskandar
1927 – 2000
Popo Iskandar, born in Garut, was an influential Indonesian modernist painter, art critic, and writer. He began painting in 1944 and later graduated from Universitas Indonesia and Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), where he also lectured at IKIP Bandung. His brother, a drawing teacher, sparked his early interest in painting, and he was initially influenced by the style of Hendra Gunawan.
Popo's works often feature animals, most notably roosters, tigers, and especially cats, which became his most recognizable and iconic subjects. His unique style and artistic contributions earned him an art award from the Indonesian government in 1980. Throughout his career, Popo exhibited widely in Indonesia and internationally, cementing his legacy as a master of modern art.
