    Affandi Koesoema

    Indonesia Indonesia

    1907 – 1990

Affandi is one of Indonesia’s most influential modern artists of the 20th century. Born in 1907 in Cirebon, he was a self-taught painter who learned the basics of art by studying anatomy, perspective, and academic techniques. Over time, he developed a deep understanding of form and shape. However, for Affandi, painting was never just about reproducing reality—it was about channeling his emotions onto the canvas through bold colors and expressive strokes.

He began painting seriously in 1935, leaving his job at a cinema in Bandung to pursue art full-time. He later joined Kelompok Lima Bandung (The Bandung Group of Five). His expressive style, known for its swirling brushstrokes and vivid colors, has often been compared to Van Gogh.

Throughout his career, Affandi received international recognition. He was honored as a Professor of Painting by Ohio State University and received an honorary doctorate from the National University of Singapore in 1974. In 1977, he was awarded the International Peace Prize by the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation. His works have been showcased in prestigious exhibitions worldwide, including the Venice Biennale and the São Paulo Biennale.
