Arthur Eland was a Dutch painter born in Salatiga, Central Java, and the twin brother of artist Leo Eland. Their father served as an officer in the KNIL (Royal Netherlands East Indies Army), and Arthur himself pursued a military career. He was stationed at one point in Surinam as an officer in the Dutch army. Alongside his service, he developed a reputation as a painter, producing landscapes, seascapes, and scenes of Indonesia that reflect both European realist traditions and the tropical atmosphere of the archipelago.
