Adam Lay
1949 – 2014
Adam Lay was born in Wonosobo, Central Java, on September 25, 1949. He began painting during his elementary school years and is celebrated as a self-taught artist. His first solo exhibition was held in 1979 at Hotel Indonesia, Jakarta, and he went on to participate in numerous exhibitions in Indonesia and Australia.
Known for his animal paintings, particularly doves and horses, Adam Lay often depicted wild horses running freely across vast landscapes, symbolizing unbridled freedom. After suffering a stroke in 2005, he decided to stop painting horses, expressing a desire to break free from any creative constraints. Just as his horses embodied freedom, he believed the artist should also be free to explore subjects without limitation.
