Liem Tjoe Ing
1922 – 1996
Liem Tjoe Ing was born in Surakarta, Central Java, on 22 June 1922. He studied under Siau Tik Kwie during the Japanese occupation (1942–1945) and was a member of both the Pelangi Artist Association and Himpunan Budaya Surakarta (HBS). Known as a sculptor, designer, and realist painter, his works ranged from popular scenes to landscapes, flowers, and dances, with notable murals still visible on the ceiling of Mangkunegaran Palace, Surakarta.
He paused his artistic career for a decade while serving in the Surakarta legislative assembly (1966–1971) with the Indonesian Christian Party. In 1978, Vice President Adam Malik invited him to compile Paintings in Adam Malik’s Collection.
