Sumardi
1917 – 1983
Born in Solo, Central Java in 1917, Sumardi began working as a professional painter soon after finishing Dutch school in 1937, focusing particularly on portraiture. In 1938, he assisted American artist W. Stoyed during his commission to paint the Sunan of Surakarta’s family, gaining valuable training in European realism and human anatomy. This experience shaped Sumardi’s reputation as a realist painter with a distinctive romantic touch.
His works adorned the state palaces in Jakarta and Bogor, and one of his paintings was published in President Soekarno’s Collection of Paintings, Book IV (1957), compiled by Lee Man Fong. Sumardi also exhibited in Solo, Semarang, Surabaya, and Jakarta, often through the Surakarta Cultural Center (Himpunan Budaya Surakarta).
