Jang Cheol Seok
B. 1957
Jang Cheol Seok (Jakka Jang), is a multifaceted contemporary artist whose work combines symbolic critique with a refined figurative approach. Currently serving as President of the International Committee of the Korean Art Association and of the 21st Century International Culture and Art Exchange Association, he has held 60 solo exhibitions and participated in nearly 800 group shows worldwide, from Seoul, Beijing, and Tokyo to New York, Paris, Dubai, and Singapore.
His paintings often use everyday objects—flowers wrapped in newspapers, glasses, envelopes—to convey layered social and cultural commentary, transforming still-life subjects into reflections on memory, respect, and historical consciousness. Over the years, he has published several art volumes, including Korean Figurative Paintings (2010), For You (2014), Painter (2015), and Nude Paintings: Moving Body (2017).
His distinguished career has been recognized with awards such as the Korean Regional Contribution Award (2012), Writer of the Year Award (2014), Korean Creative Culture and Arts Award (2015), the Grand Prize for Brilliant Koreans (2016), and the Korea Sharing Award (2018), affirming his role as an influential figure in the global art scene.
