Koeh Sia Yong
B. 1938
Koeh Sia Yong is a pioneering Singaporean artist and influential figure in the nation’s art history. A graduate of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (1958), he was a key member of the Equator Art Society, which promoted social realism and gave voice to the working class until its dissolution in 1972. Beyond painting, Koeh worked as an art editor, graphic designer, and political cartoonist before devoting himself fully to art.
Renowned for both his expressive oil paintings and sharp satirical cartoons, Koeh documents Southeast Asia’s social history while offering witty commentary on contemporary issues. He has held more than a dozen solo shows and exhibited widely, with works collected by the National Museum of Singapore, Fukuoka Art Museum, HSBC, and numerous private collectors.
