Handrio
1926 – 2010
Handrio was born in 1926 in Purwakarta and began his painting career under Basuki Abdullah. During the Japanese period, he studied with Sudjojono and Agus Djaja at Keimin Bunka Shidoso and Poetera in Jakarta. Initially, his works reflected realism and surrealism, but by the 1950s, he shifted to a semi-abstract style, breaking shapes into geometric planes. This approach set him apart from Yogyakarta painters of the time, who focused on populist themes. His semi-abstract works often analyzed still life objects and musical instruments.
By the late 1960s, these forms evolved into dynamic and complex geometric spaces. In the 1980s, Handrio’s abstract style reached its peak, characterized by a masterful use of space, planes, and color. His works from this period convey rhythm, complexity, balance, and a dynamic visual harmony.
