Teng Nee Cheong
1951 – 2013
Teng Nee Cheong was renowned for his richly coloured oil paintings and charcoal drawings of the human figure. Influenced by Balinese mythology, Hinduism, Buddhism, Asian mural traditions, Persian miniatures, and the gilded works of Gustav Klimt, Teng developed a distinctive style that fused Asian cultural themes with decorative modernism. His early works featured semi-abstract frangipani treetops before evolving into the figurative works for which he became best known.
A graduate of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (1968), Teng received awards including the Ministry of Culture Special Award (1978), Tan Tsze Chor Art Award (1991), and the Philip Morris Singapore Art Award (1993, 1995, 1996). He held four solo exhibitions—in Singapore, Jakarta, and internationally—and participated in numerous group shows at venues such as Le Grand Palais, Paris (1987), the Hong Kong Arts Centre (1998), and the Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam (1998). His works are represented in collections including the Singapore Art Museum, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singtel, and the Neka Museum, Bali.
