Takashi Murakami
B. 1962
Takashi Murakami is one of the most influential contemporary artists working today. Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese painting, anime, sci-fi, and global pop culture, Murakami creates paintings, sculptures, and films populated by recurring, mutating characters such as Mr. DOB and his iconic smiling flowers. His works collapse the boundaries between fine art and commercial culture, embodying his theory of Superflat—a concept he introduced in 2000 to describe the aesthetic and cultural “flatness” linking Edo-period ukiyo-e to contemporary Japanese subcultures like anime and kawaii.
Murakami earned his BA, MFA, and PhD in nihonga (traditional Japanese painting) from Tokyo University of the Arts. In 1996, he founded the Hiropon Factory—now Kaikai Kiki Co. Ltd.—which serves as both an art studio and production company. Beyond his gallery work, Murakami is known for his collaboration with Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton (2002–2015) and for exhibitions that merge history, spirituality, and pop imagery.
