Abdul Djalil Pirous
1932 – 2024
Abdul Djalil Pirous was born in Meulaboh on 11 March 1932, graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 1964. He pursued advanced studies in printmaking and graphic design at the Rochester Institute of Technology, USA (1969). Upon returning to Indonesia, he pioneered graphic design education at ITB and established the Decenta art and design studio in 1973. He later became the first Dean of ITBs Faculty of Arts and Design (1984–1990) and was appointed ITB Professor in 1994.
Pirous works have been showcased in numerous national and international exhibitions. Recognized for his contributions as an artist and humanist, he received several prestigious awards, including the Art Award from the Minister of Education and Culture (1985), the Cultural Satyalancana from the President of Indonesia (2002), and the Habibie Award (2015). He passed away on 16 April 2024.
