Gatot Widodo
B. 1968
Gatot Widodo is an Indonesian painter known for his inventive use of mixed media and his expressive visual language. A graduate of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta, he began seriously pursuing painting during his student years in the late 1980s. His passion for art was influenced by his father, who had a deep appreciation for music. Gatot held his solo exhibition Not So Big, But There’s Lots to See in Bali (1999) and has participated in numerous group exhibitions across Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Jakarta, and Bandung.
Working primarily with mixed media, Gatot enjoys the freedom of combining different materials such as wood, metal, and canvas to create textured, dynamic compositions. His approach allows him to bridge painting, sculpture, and craftsmanship, resulting in works that are both experimental and deeply personal. His paintings have been exhibited internationally, including in China (1998), Singapore (2010), and Chicago, USA (2016), and are held in private collections in China, Singapore, and the United States.
