Ahmad Sadali
1924 – 1987
Ahmad Sadali was a leading figure in Indonesian modern art, known for blending Islamic spirituality with abstract expressionism. He studied fine arts at ITB, graduating in 1953, and later continued his studies in the U.S. at the State University of Iowa and the New York Art Students League.
Beyond his art, Sadali was a dedicated educator, serving as Head of ITB’s Faculty of Fine Arts (1962–1968), Dean (1968–1969), and Vice-Rector (1969–1976). He played a key role in shaping Indonesian art education.
As a major exponent of Mazhab Bandung, he participated in prominent exhibitions such as 11 Seniman Bandung (1966), Pameran Besar Seni Lukis Indonesia (1976), and the Islamic Calligraphic Painting Exhibition in Saudi Arabia (1985). His works have been celebrated in solo exhibitions, including Lukisan Sadali (1987) and Ahmad Sadali: Karya, Pemikiran, Penafsiran (2014).
In recognition of his contributions, the Indonesian government honored him with Anugerah Seni Indonesia award in 1972.
