Kartono Yudhokusumo
1924 – 1957
Kartono Yudhokusumo was an Indonesian artist known as the "Father of Modern Indonesian Decorative Painting." He began painting at a young age, studying under several renowned Dutch and Japanese artists, including Willem F.M. Bosschaert, Ernest Dezentje, and Chiyoji Yazaki, who recognized and praised his exceptional talent.
Kartono’s distinctive decorative style featured meticulous detail and a strong use of perspective. His prolific work, created with various mediums like oil, watercolor, and ink, depicted a wide range of subjects, including landscapes, still life, and scenes of everyday life. After 1949, he moved to Bandung, where he continued to paint the landscapes of West Java, often traveling on his large motorcycle. He tragically passed away at the age of 33.
