Krijono
1951 – 2011
Krijono was an Indonesian artist known for his bold and expressive paintings. Born in Jakarta, he was immersed in art from a young age due to his father, an art collector and gallery owner. He began his formal training under art critic Kusnadi and later attended the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI) Yogyakarta in 1971.
Krijono was known for his flamboyant expressionistic style, characterized by bright colors, spontaneous bold lines, and dynamic brushstrokes. His work evolved after moving to Ubud, Bali, where he created a modern style filled with colors inspired by his new surroundings. He experimented with various mediums, including batik, and even combined traditional and kimono painting techniques during his training in Tokyo.
His work has been exhibited extensively worldwide, including in Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Italy, and France. Fashion designer Gianni Versace was a notable admirer of Krijono's vibrant color palette, especially his use of red, green, and gold. His works are documented in the books Great Charcoals by Indonesian Artist Krijono (1997) and Krijono: The Flying Elephant (2000).
