Iswanto is an Indonesian artist born in Kebumen, Central Java. He studied Fine Art and Design at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta from 1986 to 1994. Since 1988, he has held solo exhibitions in Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Denmark, Jakarta, and Bandung, and has joined numerous group exhibitions, including the Yogyakarta Biennale II (1990) and C.G. Jensen’s Kunstforening in Denmark (1991). His awards include the Best Sketch Award from ISI Yogyakarta and finalist positions in both the Philip Morris Art Award and the Indofood Art Award.
For Iswanto, painting is a reflection of life and belief, expressed through bright colors and simple yet compelling themes. His works sit between representation and abstraction, depicting figures, animals, and landscapes with expressive, non-photorealistic brushwork. This blend of recognizable forms and emotional interpretation characterizes his distinct expressionistic style.
