Mersad Berber
1940 – 2012
Mersad Berber (1940–2012) was a Bosnian painter, widely regarded as one of the most significant contemporary artists of his region. A graduate of the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts, he later taught at the Sarajevo Academy of Fine Arts.
His work spans painting, graphic arts, tapestry, illustration, scenography, and even animation. Berber’s celebrated cycles of paintings draw on the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, weaving medieval to modern motifs with contemporary commentary. His rich, layered style has attracted collectors worldwide, and in 1984 his work entered the Tate Gallery collection. From 1992 he lived and worked between Zagreb and Dubrovnik.
