I Ketut Budiana
B. 1950
I Ketut Budiana was born in 1950 in Padang Tegal, Ubud, into a family of master artisans. Trained by his father—a sculptor, painter, and temple architect—he developed strong roots in traditional Balinese art. He later studied at SSRI Denpasar and the Indonesian College of Fine Arts, and briefly trained with Dutch artist Rudolf Bonnet in 1974. Beyond painting, Budiana is skilled in creating sacred temple images, ceremonial masks, and sarcophagi for Balinese rituals.
Budiana began exhibiting in the early 1970s and has since shown his work widely in Indonesia and abroad. His paintings have been featured at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, with solo exhibitions in Seattle (1995), Barcelona (1998), Ubud (2000), and Tokyo Station Gallery (2003).
His works are held in major collections including Museum Puri Lukisan, Neka Art Museum, Agung Rai Museum of Art, and Fukuoka Asian Art Museum. He also contributed to the art community as curator at Museum Puri Lukisan and ARMA in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
