Rustamadji
1932 – 1990
Rustamadji began painting in 1946 under the guidance of S. Sudjojono at Sanggar Indonesia Muda (Young Indonesian Artists Association) in Madiun. In the 1950s, his early naturalistic style gradually evolved toward impressionism.
He actively took part in many exhibitions in Indonesia and abroad and lived in Surabaya until his passing in 1990. Working in realism and naturalism, Rustamadji often depicted daily life, landscapes, market scenes, and dancers. His paintings reflect a strong sense of nationalism and equality, portraying social and emotional depth through skillful handling of light, shadow, and mood.
