I Gusti Ketut Kobot
1917 – 1999
Born in Pengosekan, Ubud in 1917, I Gusti Ketut Kobot was a member of the influential Pita Maha painters group from 1936 to 1942. Unlike many of his contemporaries, his style remained highly individualistic, often depicting scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
While many Balinese artists of the 1920s were influenced by Western painters like Rudolf Bonnet and Walter Spies, Kobot uniquely combined traditional themes with modern techniques. He held a solo exhibition at Museum Puri Lukisan in 1975 and participated in a group show in Sydney the same year alongside emerging Pengosekan artists. He was honored with the Wijaya Kusuma Art Award (1978) from the Gianyar government and the Dharma Kusuma Award from the Bali provincial government. Kobot passed away in 1999.
