I Nyoman Erawan
B. 1958
I Nyoman Erawan studied at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta and began working as an artist in 1983. Raised in an artistic environment of painters, sculptors, dancers, and musicians, he chose the path of art in his youth and trained first at the High School of Arts in Denpasar before moving to Yogyakarta. These experiences shaped his vision, allowing him to weave Balinese traditions with Western approaches in a continuous dialogue that defines his work.
Erawan’s art draws deeply from Balinese-Hindu philosophy, particularly the concept of Trimurti, exploring creation, preservation, and destruction through cycles of life and death, chaos and order, tradition and modernity. His practice spans painting, installation, video, and performance art. He has exhibited widely in Indonesia and abroad. His awards include the Lempad Prize (1982), Best Painting Award at ISI Yogyakarta (1984), and First Prize from the Philip Morris Group of Companies.
