Hendrik Arend Ludolf Wichers

Hendrik Arend Ludolf Wichers (1893-1968) was a Dutch painter born in Tarutung, North Sumatra. After graduating from the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam and studying tropical agriculture, he returned to Indonesia in 1919. Initially working on plantations, he soon became a full-time artist in Java.

Wichers displayed considerable talent in his impressionistic portraits and landscapes, depicting volcanoes, paddy fields, townscapes, and Balinese temples. He was an active member of the "Bataviasche Kunstskring" from 1923 to 1936, participating in numerous exhibitions alongside friends like Carel Dake, Ernest Dezentjé, and Leo Eland. His successful career saw many of his works acquired by collections such as the Tropenmuseum and the Nijmeegs Museum Commanderie van St. Jan in the Netherlands. Wichers returned to the Netherlands in 1946 and passed away in Nijmegen in 1968.
