1886 – 1946

Carel Lodewijk Dake Jr. was a Dutch painter known for his impressionistic depictions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Indonesian landscape. He began studying under his father, artist C.L. Dake, and later trained with E. Pieters, A.M. Gorter, and H.M. Krabbe in Laren, the Netherlands. In 1912, he moved to Indonesia, where he lived and worked extensively across Java, Sumatra, and Bali. His fascination with the region’s natural beauty became a central theme in his art.

An Indie Mooi painter, Dake also explored scenes from Cambodia and Thailand, but it was Indonesia that most deeply inspired him. He participated in numerous exhibitions in Java and worked in various media including oil, watercolour, and graphic art. In 1915, he was commissioned to create three large dioramas depicting Indonesia for the World Fair in San Francisco.
