Koeboe Sarawan
B. 1961
Koeboe Sarawan is a surrealist painter known for his unsettling and thought-provoking works. He masterfully blends realism with deep philosophical themes, creating eerie, dreamlike settings inhabited by distorted figures, animals, and plants. His paintings often explore complex issues of religion, morality, and humanity.
A graduate of Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta, Koeboe's artistic journey was deeply influenced by his family's background in batik and traditional puppetry. He emerged from the vibrant Yogyakarta surrealist movement of the 1980s. Over his career spanning more than 30 years, his inspiration has come from extensive travels, including a 2011 exhibition at the National Art Gallery Jakarta that reflected his journey to Tibet.
