Tatang Ganar

Indonesia Indonesia

1936 – 2004

Tatang Ganar was an artist born in Bandung, West Java. He was a leading figure in Indonesian modern and contemporary painting, best known for works that highlighted social themes and the stark divide between rich and poor. His canvases often depicted the struggles of blue-collar workers, using art as a medium for social awareness.

After completing his studies, Tatang moved to Yogyakarta to join Sanggar Pelukis Rakyat, where he drew inspiration from fellow artists and the city’s vibrant cultural life. Returning to Bandung in 1961, he began his career as a professional painter and introduced a body of work that documented socio-political injustices and everyday life.

Among his most notable series is Bunga Rampi, divided into three parts: Balada Tanpa Nada (Ballad Without Tune), Warna Siang dan Malam (Colors of Day and Night), and Masa Kota Kembang (The Time of Kota Kembang), which remain significant contributions to Indonesian art history.
