I Made Kedol
1950 – 2017
I Made “Kedol” Subrata is an Indonesian painting maestro best known for his distinctive “spaghetti technique.” The nickname “Kedol,” meaning left-handed in Balinese, refers to his habit of painting with his left hand.
His artistic journey began while working at a batik workshop in Yogyakarta, where he was inspired by the raised textures of batik patterns. Using plastic piping bags instead of brushes, he created layered, textured lines on canvas, a method later dubbed the “spaghetti technique” by a Swiss curator. His works often depict Balinese agrarian life, and he actively participated in exhibitions both in Indonesia and internationally.
