Redha Sorana Sunarko was a pioneering Indonesian artist whose practice spanned painting, ceramics, sculpture, graphic art, and performance. Born in Bandung, he studied at the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) in Yogyakarta, where he became known for challenging artistic conventions.
His controversial exhibition What Personality? at Sono Gallery in 1977 and his unauthorized installation at ASRI—where he wrapped campus statues and buildings in white cloth and newspapers—marked groundbreaking moments in Indonesian art, establishing him as one of the country’s first performance artists. Redha’s works explore form and spatial relationships, often featuring recurring motifs such as fish, horses, and menong dolls drawn from Javanese folk culture.
