I Nyoman Nuarta
B. 1951
Nyoman Nuarta was born in Bali and moved to Bandung in the early 1970s to study at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Raised in a traditional village environment, his early life shaped his deep connection to nature and the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which continues to inform his artistic vision. In 1977, he became part of the Indonesian New Art Movement, and in 1979, while still a student, he won the national competition to create a monument of President Sukarno, marking the beginning of his professional career.
Renowned as one of Indonesia’s most prominent sculptors, Nuarta has produced more than 200 works exhibited nationally and internationally, earning numerous awards worldwide. His major public sculptures include Arjuna Wijaya in Jakarta, Jalesveva Jayamahe in Surabaya, and the iconic Garuda Wisnu Kencana in Bali. Alongside his artistic practice, he founded NuArt Sculpture Park and continues to play an active role in cultural and national development initiatives.
