Sudarso

Indonesia Indonesia

1914 2006

Sudarso was a prominent Indonesian painter whose career began unexpectedly. As an egg and milk seller, he met and learned from Affandi, and other painters like Barli, Wahdi, and Hendra. Sudarso later taught at the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) in Yogyakarta.

He is best known for his sensitive portrayals of Indonesian women and landscapes, themes that became central to his artistic practice. Rather than presenting idealized figures, he sought to capture the dignity, character, and psychological presence of ordinary village women, often placing them within lush rural settings that reflected the beauty of the Indonesian countryside.

Sudarso held solo exhibitions from 1961-1969 and participated in numerous group shows, including "19 Indonesian Painters in Singapore and Malaysia (1967). His distinctive works remain highly regarded in Indonesian art.
