Su Tianci

Su Tianci was born in Guangdong Province, China. He studied at the Chongqing National Art School and later graduated from the Department of Art at the Central National University in 1946. He joined the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, where he became an assistant to Lin Fengmian, alongside artists such as Wu Guanzhong and Zao Wou-ki. Over his career, he taught at several institutions including Shandong University and the Nanjing Institute of Arts, and later served as a consultant to the China Oil Painting Society.

An important representative of modern Chinese oil painting, Su Tianci developed a distinctive freehand style that blended Western techniques with traditional Chinese aesthetics. His notable works include The Early Spring and The Charm of Snow, with The Early Spring receiving a Bronze Medal at the Seventh National Art Exhibition and entering the collection of the National Art Museum of China. He exhibited internationally in Germany, Japan, the United States, and France, and was honored with a major retrospective at the National Art Museum of China in 2008, showcasing works from 1948 to 2006.
