Paul Husner

Born in Basel, Switzerland, in 1942, Paul Husner trained as a painter and graphic artist in Amsterdam at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and the Rijks Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten between 1965 and 1969. His talent was quickly acknowledged with awards such as the Uriot Prize (1969), Willink van Collen Prijs (1971), Jeanna Bieruma Oosting Prijs (1974), and Arti Medaille (1987).

From 1980 to 1988, he served as professor of painting and drawing at the Rijks Academie in Amsterdam, shaping a generation of artists. His works have since been exhibited across Europe, the United States, Singapore, and Indonesia, and are housed in collections including the Netherlands State, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the City Council of Amsterdam, Duta Fine Art Museum Jakarta, and the Neka Museum in Bali.

Since 1997, Bali has been the heart of Husner’s practice. Together with his wife, anthropologist Tine G. Ruiter, he immersed himself in rituals, dances, and village rhythms in Bali.
