Chris Suharso

Chris Suharso (born Siauw Swie Ching, 1931-2014) was a self-taught Indonesian artist born in Solo, who became renowned for his watercolors, though he also worked in pastels and oils, blending impressionism and realism. He learned painting from his uncle, Siauw Tik Kwie.

In 1963, Suharso assisted Lee Man Fong on the monumental Ramayana painting at Hotel Indonesia, commissioned by President Soekarno, whose collection includes two of Suharsos own works. His art, particularly his Balinese ritual and landscape pieces, was showcased in his first solo exhibition at Balai Budaya, Jakarta, in 1965. Throughout his career, Suharso held ten solo exhibitions in Jakarta. His legacy was further honored in 2014 with a dedicated book and exhibition, The Tranquil World of Chris Suharso.
