Amri Yahya
1939 – 2004
Born in Sukaraja, Ogan Ilir on September 29, 1939, Amri Yahya was an influential Indonesian artist known for his contemporary batik paintings and pioneering work in Islamic calligraphy art. A graduate of ASRI Yogyakarta in 1961, he later became a lecturer at UNY and UII. His works were often inspired by the landscapes of Lebak Lebung, reflecting a strong cultural and regional identity.
He founded the Indonesian Fine Art Society (HSRI) in 1979 and received several major awards, including the Pan-Pacific Art Award in Seoul and the Sriwijaya Award. He also earned an honorary doctorate from UNY and was nominated for the UNESCO Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture. Amri Yahya passed away in Yogyakarta in 2004 at the age of 65.
