Hong Ling
Born in Beijing in 1955, Hong Ling studied oil painting in the years following the Cultural Revolution. Although trained in a Western medium, he turned to the mountains of rural China as his primary source of inspiration. By combining oil painting techniques with the philosophy and visual spirit of traditional Chinese landscape art, he developed a highly distinctive style known for its dense vegetation, layered textures, and immersive atmosphere. His works reinterpret classical landscape painting through a contemporary lens.
For Hong Ling, the meaning of a painting is not fixed by the artist but completed by the viewer. He often draws from his deep attachment to nature and rural life, translating his personal experience of mountains and forests into layered, vibrant compositions. While many viewers respond to the sense of longing for nature within his work, he does not impose a specific message. Instead, he invites audiences to approach his landscapes openly, allowing each individual to find their own reflection and interpretation within the scene.
