Bui Huu Hung

Bui Huu Hung was born in 1957 in Hanoi, Vietnam, at the heart of the country’s wartime struggles. His fascination with lacquer painting began at the age of 18 and has since defined his artistic journey. Driven by a desire to preserve this age-old tradition, Bui traveled to remote villages in his youth to uncover and master ancient Vietnamese lacquer techniques.

After completing a period of combat duty in 1978, he pursued formal training at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he deepened his understanding of traditional lacquer. Since his first international solo exhibition in the 1990s, Bui has exhibited widely across Asia, Europe, and the United States, establishing himself as one of Vietnam’s most prominent and influential contemporary lacquer artists.
