Sudjana Kerton

Indonesia Indonesia

1922 1994

Sudjana Kerton was born in Bandung, Indonesia, in 1922. He was a renowned painter and sculptor known for his documentary-style works that captured Indonesia’s struggle for independence. His sketches, paintings, and sculptures depicting this pivotal period were exhibited at the Sono Budoyo Museum in Yogyakarta and in various cities across Java.

His artistic talent earned him a fellowship to study in Amsterdam and Paris, where he further developed his skills. Later, he received a scholarship to study at the prestigious Art Students League of New York, an experience that broadened his artistic perspective.

Kerton’s works reflect a profound empathy for the everyday lives of Indonesian people, particularly farmers and laborers. His art is celebrated for its raw, expressive style and its deep social consciousness. He passed away in 1994.
