Sunaryo

Sunaryo is a renowned multidisciplinary artist and the founder of Selasar Sunaryo Art Space, a leading not-for-profit institution dedicated to contemporary art. Educated at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and later in Italy, he initially specialized in sculpture and went on to teach the discipline at ITB.

Over the years, he expanded his practice to include painting, printmaking, installation, and large-scale public works, creating pieces that balance formal strength with reflections on social, environmental, and spiritual concerns.

Recognized as one of Indonesia’s most prominent sculptors, Sunaryo has produced major public monuments, including statues of General Sudirman and of Soekarno-Hatta at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. His works have been collected by the National Gallery of Indonesia and exhibited widely.

His contributions to Indonesian art and culture have earned him numerous honors, including the Akademi Jakarta Award, Lifetime Achievement Awards from Art Stage Jakarta and Biennale Jogja (2017), and the Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture.
