Siew Hock Meng
Siew Hock Meng is a highly regarded second-generation Nanyang artist known for his pastel compositions, oil portraits, and allegorical works imbued with subtle sensuality and layered meaning. He studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts under pioneer artist Cheong Soo Pieng, before briefly leaving formal art practice to pursue a deeper engagement with aesthetics and philosophy.
He later returned to Singapore in 1975, where he ran an art gallery and developed a strong reputation in portraiture, attracting collectors from Indonesia and Taiwan. Over time, his practice expanded to include figurative works and scenes of Asian life, shaped by his travels across the region, including Bali, Myanmar, India, and Cambodia.
In addition to painting, Siew has published several books on art and visual language and has been actively involved in the arts community, including the Equator Art Society and the Singapore Watercolour Society. His contributions have been recognized with awards such as the National Day Medal for Fine Arts (1971) and the Visual Arts Creation Award from the NAFA Alumni Association (1981, 1984).
