Rita Widagdo is a renowned sculptor and respected lecturer at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), known for her pioneering role in abstract sculpture in Indonesia. She studied at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart (1954–1957) before moving to Indonesia and joining ITB’s Department of Art in 1966, where she taught sculpture, ceramics, and foundational art courses.
Together with But Muchtar and Gregorius Sidharta, Rita helped establish the foundation of modern sculpture education in Indonesia. Her debut in the 11 Seniman Bandung exhibition (1966) marked a milestone in the emergence of Indonesian abstract sculpture. Rita has created numerous public artworks across the country, including Dynamic Movement (1973), installed in Slipi, Jakarta. She retired from ITB in 1992, leaving a lasting legacy in art education and monumental sculpture.
