Broertje Muchtar Soebandi
1930 – 1993
Born in Bandung on December 30, 1930. One of Indonesia’s prominent modern artists and educators. He belonged to the first generation of fine arts graduates from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) and later continued his studies in the United States. In 1963, he returned to Indonesia to help establish the Department of Sculpture at ITB alongside Rita Widagdo and Gregorius Sidharta Soegijo.
As a student of Ries Mulder, But absorbed strong modernist influences, particularly Cubism and geometric abstraction associated with the “Bandung School.” His works emphasized formal exploration, structural clarity, and the relationship between colour, space, and form.
