But Muchtar
But Muchtar, born Broertje Muchtar Soebandi in Bandung, was one of Indonesia’s prominent modern artists and educators. The seventh of eleven children from a Banten family, he belonged to the first generation of fine arts graduates from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) and later continued his studies in the United States. In 1963, he returned to Indonesia to help prepare the establishment of the Department of Sculpture at ITB alongside Rita Widagdo and G. Sidharta. After the Sculpture Studio officially opened in 1964, he built a long academic career, serving in key leadership roles, including as Rector of ISI Yogyakarta for two terms from 1984 to 1992.
Known as both a sculptor and painter, But developed a strong modernist foundation. Under the guidance of Ries Mulder, his paintings were often associated with the “Bandung School,” characterized by formal exploration, structural clarity, and engagement with modern art principles.
