Auke Cornelis Sonnega
Auke Cornelis Sonnega was a Dutch artist deeply influenced by Indonesian culture, particularly Bali. Educated in Amsterdam, he became renowned for his spiritually-charged paintings.
Arriving in Indonesia in 1935, Sonnega eventually settled in Ubud, Bali, after World War II, taking over Rudolf Bonnet's former studio. His style, initially Art Deco-influenced, evolved dramatically after 1951 following spiritual visions, leading to emotionally heightened works inspired by Balinese music and portraits.
Despite President Sukarno collecting his art, political pressures forced Sonnega to leave Indonesia in 1957. He returned to the Netherlands but struggled to regain his equilibrium, passing away in 1963.
