Louis Bouché

Louis Bouché was an American painter, muralist, and educator active in New York. Born into an artistic family, he studied in Paris at Académie de la Grande Chaumière before continuing his training at the Art Students League of New York. Early in his career he became involved with progressive artistic circles, exhibiting with the Whitney Studio Club, which later developed into the Whitney Museum of American Art, and spending time among the artists’ community in Woodstock.

Alongside his painting practice, Bouché established a successful career as a muralist and designer, completing commissions for major institutions including the U.S. Department of the Interior, Radio City Music Hall, and the Pennsylvania Railroad. He also worked in illustration and advertising for publications such as Condé Nast and Town & Country. From the 1940s onward he taught at the Art Students League and later at the National Academy of Design, contributing to the development of American art education. Bouché passed away in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, in 1969.
